WHAT ARE THE IMPROV OLYMPICS?

The IMPROV OLYMPICS is the first city-wide competition in improvisation for students ages 14-19 with an interest in theatre. “Be funny. Be serious. Be there!”

WHEN & WHERE WILL THE OLYMPICS BE HELD?

The IMPROV OLYMPICS will be held on April 13, 2008 from 11:30 – 3:30 PM at The Cleveland Playhouse Education Department and KULTURE KIDS, a 501(c)(3) arts and culture organization, www.kulturekids.org

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

The IMPROV OLYMPICS are open to anyone ages 14-19 years old. Interested participants should form a TEAM of 4-5 members. All participants need the signature of a parent or guardian. Teams should designate a participant to be the “Team Leader.” All teams need an adult sponsor and someone who will accompany the team to the Olympics as supervisor! We are also seeking Technicians, Volunteers, & a Photographer. See more below.

WHAT IS THE JOB OF THE SPONSOR?

The sponsor should make sure application is filled out correctly and acts as a liason between the Olympic committee, the team, and the teams’ parents or guardians. Sponsor may attend Olympics OR designate another adult to attend as supervisor.

WHO ARE THE JUDGES and EMCEES?

Cleveland theatre professionals. Judges have included Director Fred Sternfeld, Lisa Ortenzi of the Great Lakes Theatre Festival, Actor/Karamu Director Jimmie Woody, AEA/AFTRA Actress Jean Zarzour, and acclaimed Improv Troupe SOMETHING DADA.

HOW AND WHAT DO YOU WIN?

Just like the official Olympic Games, teams will receive scores from the judges. Scores, based on vocal and physical techniques of actors, as well as creativity and cooperation of the team, determine who receives the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals. There are also additional awards given for various talents of the performers and teams and FREE FOOD!

HOW CAN A TEAM PREPARE FOR THE OLYMPICS?

Read the Provisos! Take a class in improvisation or acting. Attend improv shows downtown. Watch WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY? Learn to think on your feet. Have a sense of humor. Practice working together as a team. Practice performing improvisations...or just “wing it”.

ARE THE EVENTS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC?

The Olympics, while not advertized, are open to the public with limited seating. Just email and ask us how many you would like to bring.

SEEKING TECHNICIANS? WHAT WILL THEY DO?

Techies are the Stage Managers who run each event. They work with the teams, judges, emcees and keep everything on target. They manage the stage, prop tables, set up/strike, cue teams, announce events/rules, and in general manage the competition on the day-of the Olympics. FILL OUT THE VOLUNTEER FORM!

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS? WHAT WILL THEY DO?

Volunteers assist the Stage Managers, Judges & Emcees. They will sign in Teams, help with food, choose good music to play during breaks, assist with set up/strike and in general help out on the day-of the Olympics. Also seeking a volunteer PHOTOGRAPHER (with a good digital camera and excellent eye) to record the event! Volunteers can be any age, 13 and above. FILL OUT THE VOLUNTEER FORM!

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT FOR TECHNICIANS & VOLUNTEERS?

Show up at 9:30 to set up. Help during the event from 11:30 – 3:30. then, assist with clean up & socialize till 4:00.

WHY VOLUNTEER?

It is FUN! Volunteers have said, “The Olympics was a giant party! I had the time of my life.” Plus you will meet High School students from all over Northeast Ohio.
